Badgers set to open season at Cougar Classic Sept. 8-10

Sept. 5, 2013

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s golf team tees off the 2013-14 season this weekend, when the Badgers travel to Charleston, S.C., for the 11th annual Cougar Classic.

The College of Charleston plays host to the event, which will be held Sunday-Tuesday, Sept. 8-10, at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. UW returns for a fourth year to the 6,204-yard, Par 72 course.

The tournament features several of the nation’s top-ranked teams from the Golf World/WGCA Coaches’ Preseason Division I Poll including No. 10 Florida, No. 20 NC State, No. 22 LSU and No. 24 Baylor. Of the 20 teams competing, 15 were represented at the 2013 NCAA Regionals.

University of Florida was crowned tournament champion last fall after shooting a 12-under par put in total and will look to become the second team in event history to win back-to-back titles.

Behind a career-best 217 by then-junior Kris Yoo, Wisconsin finished 12th at the tournament with an 18-over 822 in a strong field of 24 teams. Yoo led the Badgers at 1-over, tying for 22nd place.

2013 Field: Auburn, Baylor, Charleston Southern, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Florida, Furman, LSU, Maryland, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, NC State, UNCG, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.

Coming off of one of its best seasons in school history, the UW squad returns four of the five players who competed in Wisconsin’s second-ever appearance in the NCAA championship.

In addition to Yoo, letterwinners junior Kimberly Dinh, junior Aaren Ziegler and senior Alexis Nelson are returning for the team.

The experienced trio competed for Wisconsin at the opening-season tournament last year, with Ziegler tying for 25th, Dinh tying for 71st and Nelson tying for 78th.

Yoo, Dinh and Ziegler are set to compete for the Badgers against the nation’s best this weekend. Senior Alyssa Elliott and freshman Brooke Ferrell round out Wisconsin’s roster for the event.
