Badgers complete first round of competition at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- In its season opener, the Wisconsin women's golf team put together a strong team effort on Sunday to finish the first round of the 2013 fall season tied for 11th place with a 10-over par 289 at the 54-hole Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall in Charleston, S.C..

Mississippi State recorded a six-under 282 to lead all teams. South Carolina and Clemson are tied in second place, after both teams recorded a three-under 285 on day one of the three-day competition.

Junior Kimberly Dinh led the way individually for UW, finishing her first round in a tie for 26th with a 1-over 73. Ending the first round right behind Dinh was Wisconsin’s Kris Yoo. The experienced senior capped off a strong day of competition tied for 38th place with a 2-over 74.

UW junior Aaren Ziegler finished her round with a 3-over 75 to tie for 47th, while freshman Brooke Ferrell had her collegiate debut to tie for 61st with a 4-over par 76.

Senior Alyssa Elliott closed out the day for the Badgers tied for 91st place with a 7-over 79.

Brittany Marchand of NC State and Ally McDonald of Mississippi State jumped out to an early lead with a 6-under par 66, which ties as the second-lowest round in the 11-year history of the Cougar Classic.

Additionally, South Carolina’s Samantha Swinehart recorded the only a hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 6.

The defending champion University of Florida closed out the day in eighth place with a 3-over 291. The Gators are competing to become only the second team in event history to win back-to-back titles.
