Badgers miss NCAA Championships qualifying

CLE ELUM, Wash. -- The Wisconsin women's golf team finished one place out of a national qualifying spot tying for ninth place with a 57-over par 301-305-315--921 in the final round of the 54-hole NCAA West Regional held at the par-72, 6,252-yard Tumble Creek Club at the Suncadia Resort in Cle, Elum, Wash.

Top-ranked Southern California won the tournament with a 12-over par 284-294-298--876. Host Washington was second a stroke back with 288-293-297--877. Big Ten teams Michigan State was fifth (903) and Northwestern was eighth (914) and also advanced.

The medalist was Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez with a 3-under par 67-74-72--213. Washington's SooBin Kim was tied at second at 1-under 70-70-75--215. Southern Cal's Annie Park was also 1-under for the tournament with 71-71-73--215. They were the only three players under par.

Two seniors led UW. This is the second year Kris Yoo has led the Badgers in the regionals tying for 14th with 73-75-76--224. Last year the senior tied for 11th at the NCAA Central Regional with a 217 which included a course and school record 65 in the third round.

Alexis Nelson concludes her UW career with her best regional finish tying for 31st with a 13-over 72-77-89--229. Junior Aaren Ziegler tied Nelson at 31st with 74-76-79--229. Freshman Brooke Ferrell experienced her first NCAA tournament finishing tied for 87th at 23-over par 82-77-80--239. Junior Kimberly Dinh finished tied for 96th at 26-over 82-80-80--242.

This Badger team concludes the season with a single season 18-hole scoring record of 299.25 per round. It qualified for three NCAA Regionals in the past four years, and had the best NCAA finish at 23rd in 2013. Last year was the first NCAA tournament appearance since 2003.

Yoo concludes her career second in career scoring with 75.74 strokes per round and Nelson is fourth with 76.87 strokes per round. Nelson's 2013-14 season average of 74.79 per round ranks second all-time. In her first collegiate season, Brooke Ferrell played in all 32 rounds for the Badgers and set the freshman scoring recrod with 74.34 strokes per round. The previous record was 76.68 set by Alyssa Elliott in 2010.
