Norman, Okla. -- It was an opportunistic time for the University of Wisconsin women's golf team to tie its lowest opening-round score of the season, as the Badgers began competition at the 2013 NCAA Central Regional in Norman, Okla., on Thursday.

Held at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club and hosted by the University of Oklahoma, the 20th-seeded Badgers shot 4-over par 292 to begin the 54-hole tournament, and end the opening round in a tie for seventh place.

Despite rainy weather conditions that lasted throughout the day, it was a competitive first day of golf for all 24 teams in contention at the NCAA Central Regional, as Wisconsin ended the day in a four-way tie for seventh place and just two strokes back of fourth place. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA National Championship in Athens, Ga.

"Unbelievably fortunate with the weather," Head Coach Todd Oehrlein said of Wisconsin's performance. "(It) rained off and on all day, but never anything terrible. (There were) storms everywhere around us and just kept moving north or south of us."

Third-seeded Florida took the first lead of the tournament into the clubhouse at 6-under par 282, followed by No. 2 seed and host Oklahama in second place at 5-under par 283. Top-seeded Duke rounded out the top three at 4-under par 284.

Emily Collins of Oklahoma paced the field and earned the individual lead at 5-under par 67, while Florida's Elcin Ulu came just behind in second place at 4-under par 68 and Lori Beth Adams of UNC Wilmington scored 3-under par 69 for third place.

Lindsay Danielson, Kimberly Dinh, Alexis Nelson, Kris Yoo and Aaren Ziegler each teed off for Wisconsin, with four-of-five Badgers entering with experience and having already competed on the 6,292-yard, par-72 course.

Translating past experience into present success was Danielson, who jumped out to an opening-day 1-under par 71 and ended in a tie for 13th place. It was the second best scoring round of the season for the senior from Osceola, Wis., who finished a round under par for just the second time this season.

A stroke behind Danielson was teammate Kris Yoo, who balanced out four bogeys with four birdies to close her first round at even par 72 and in a tie for 26th place. Yoo enters the regional tournament ranked No. 100 in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Dinh tied for 35th place at 1-over par 73, Ziegler scored 4-over par 76 to tie for 77th place and Nelson finished in a tie for 105th place with her 6-over par 78.

The 2013 NCAA Central Regional resumes play tomorrow with the second round. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. (CT). Nelson will be the first Badger to open the day with a tee time set for 8:25 a.m.
