B1G Finish: Ferrell earns fourth place at Big Ten championships

FRENCH LICK, Ind. – Wisconsin freshman Brooke Ferrell used a spectacular final round performance to place fourth in her first conference tournament and to lead the Badgers to a sixth-place finish at the 2014 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind.

Ferrell had the best round of the day with a 4-under par 68 to lead the No. 49-ranked Badgers to a 50-over par 316-305-293--914 and sixth place in the 12-team field. UW tallied the best third-round score of the day, shooting 5-over par 293 over the final 18 holes of the 54-hole competition held at the French Lick Resort on the par-72, 6,017-yard Pete Dye Course.

Wisconsin wrapped up the conference tournament with three players in the top-30 and leading the way for UW in all three rounds of play was Ferrell. She started the day tied for 13th and turned in the best performance of round three to bypass her sister, Allyssa Ferrell of Michigan State, to earn 5-over par 78-75-68--221 and a fourth-place finish.

Ferrell’s performance is the best by a UW freshman at the Big Ten championships and is the best conference finish for a Badger since Malinda Johnson took fourth in 2004. She also tied her career-best tournament finish of fourth set on Oct 12-13 at the Diane Thomason Invitational. Additionally, her third-round score of 4-under par 68 tied her career 18-hole best.

No. 31-ranked Michigan State (305-293-297) and No. 25 Ohio State (301-297-297) were named co-champions with 31-over par 895. Northwestern tallied 41-over par 307-301-297--905 to take third place, while Penn State closed out the meet in fourth place with 48-over par 306-308-298--912.

The Buckeyes’ Jessica Porvasnik claimed the individual title after shooting even-par 73-72-71--216. Porvasnik’s teammate Zoe-Bet Brake took second with 3-over par 74-71-74--219 and Northwestern's Hana Lee rounded out the top-three finishers with 4-over par 75-75-70--220. Ferrell’s sister, Allyssa, earned fifth place with an 8-over par 74-75-75--224.

UW redshirt senior Alexis Nelson earned a top-25 finish, tying for 23rd overall with 15-over par 79-76-76--231. Senior Kris Yoo tied for 28th after tallying 16-over par 79-80-73--232 and redshirt junior Kimberly Dinh tied for 34th with 18-over par 81-77-76--234.

Senior Alyssa Elliott recorded a 41st-place finish and shot 20-over par 81-78-77--236, while junior Aaren Ziegler rounded out Wisconsin’s roster tied for 44th with 21-over par 80-77-80--237.

The Badgers find out if they receive a bid to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships when selections are announced on The Golf Channel on Monday, April 28, at 5 p.m. CT.
