Wisconsin finishes second day of Big Ten championships in seventh place

French Lick, Ind. -- Northwestern and Purdue pulled away from the field, while the Wisconsin women's golf team slipped to seventh place in the second round of the 2013 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships in French Lick, Ind., on Saturday.

The Badgers began 17-over par 305 and entered the day in sixth place at the par-72 Donald Ross Golf Course, but carded a 24-over 311 through the second round and slid to seventh place (40-over par 305-311=601).

No. 29 Northwestern continued its impressive play after opening the 54-hole conference championship with a 1-under par 287, remaining atop the leaderboard by posting a 295 and ending the day 6-over par 287-295=582. Fifteenth-ranked Purdue remained on the heels of the Wildcats, as the Boilermakers shot a second-round 294 and finished five strokes back at 11-over par 293-294=587.

Echoing the neck-and-neck race between the two schools was Paula Reto of Purdue and Kaitlin Park of Northwestern. The two entered the day tied for second place, but Reto was able to edge out Park (71-72=143) and take a one-stroke lead into the clubhouse at 2-under par 71-71=142.

Wisconsin's Alexis Nelson and Kris Yoo kept themselves in position for top individual finishes. The pair of Badgers both entered the day in a tie for seventh place, as Nelson went on to finish her second round in a tie for 10th place and Yoo in a tie for 18th place.

Nelson recorded four birdies throughout her day, but battled through seven bogeys in the process to finish 3-over par on the day and total 5-over par 74-75=149. Teammate Yoo had six birdies of her own, but was able to counter and card a birdie on the 14th hole and finish her day 5-over par 77 and 7-over par 74-77=151 overall.

Lindsay Danielson, Kimberly Dinh, Alyssa Elliott and Aaren Ziegler all began the second round in the top 51 individually, but only one remained after the second round of play. Ziegler held on to finish in a tie for 36th place at 13-over par 8-77-157. Dinh, Danielson and Elliott all dropped out, as Dinh came in a tie for 56th (79-82=161), Danielson tied for 61st (78-85=163) and Elliott finished in 69th place (79-89=168).

The final round of play at the 2013 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships tees off beginning at 7 a.m. CT.
