Badgers set school 54-hole record at Westbrook Spring Invitational

PEORIA, Ariz.-  The Wisconsin women’s golf team set a new school 54-hole record and earned its first top-three finish of the spring season Monday at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., behind four top-25 individual finishes for the Badgers.

The record-setting tournament was held in ideal weather Feb. 23-24 at the par 72, 6,269-yard Vistas Golf Course at the Westbrook Village Golf Club.

The 40th-ranked Badgers played hosts to the third annual 54-hole tournament and recorded their third-place finish among the 14-team field with a 5-under par 286-288-285--859. UW was one of only three teams to finish under-par and the Badger’s 859 sets the school 54-hole record. The previous record was 865 set this fall at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Sept. 22.

After closing out day one of the invitational in second place and trailing Oregon by six strokes, the No. 34 Ohio State Buckeyes climbed to the top of the field, claiming the team championship with a record-breaking 26-under par 281-278-279--838. The previous all-time 54-hole record for the Westbrook Invitational was 853, set in 2012 by Illinois.

No. 22 Ducks recorded a second-place finish with a 16-under par 279-274-295--848. Wisconsin edged out No. 53 College of Charleston (286-285-298), who tied for fourth with Nebraska (295-287-287) with a 5-over par 869.

Ohio State’s Jessica Porvasnik was the wire-to-wire champion in the 77-person field with a tournament record 13-under par 65-67-71--203. The previous record was 205 set by Nora Lucas of Illinois on Feb. 27, 2012.

The Buckeyes’ Zoe-Beth Brake and Oregon’s Cassy Isagawa and Cathleen Santoso finished in a three-way tie for second place with a 9-under par 207.

Leading the way for the Badgers was freshman Brooke Ferrell, who tied the school 54-hole record and set her own 54-hole career low. Ferrell tied for sixth overall with a 3-under par 74-70-69--213.

Senior Kris Yoo finished second for UW and tied for 11th with a 1-under par 67-74-74--215. Senior Alexis Nelson (79-71-68) and junior Aaren Ziegler (69-75-74) tied for 22nd place overall with a 2-over par 218, which is a 54-hole season low for both teammates. Redshirt junior Kimberly Dinh rounded out Wisconsin’s scorers tied for 55th with a 9-over par 76-73-76--225.

Senior Alyssa Elliott, freshman Michelle Cheung and freshman Aya Johnson competed as individuals for Wisconsin at the tournament.

Elliott tied for 49th with a 7-over par 75-76-72--223, while Johnson tied for 67th with an 11-over par 54-hole career-best score of 80-75-72--227. Johnson’s final round score of 72 was an 18-hole career low. Cheung closed out UW’s roster tied for 73rd with a 16-over par 79-74-79--232.

Wisconsin takes a couple weeks off from competition before traveling to St. George, Utah, for the BYU Entrada Classic on March 17-18.
