Today we feature Female Athlete of the Year nominee Michala Johnson of women’s basketball.
• 2013-14 Year in Review
MADISON, Wis. -- In her first season in the Cardinal and White, Michala Johnson made an immediate impact on the Wisconsin women’s basketball team. The junior, who transferred from the University of Connecticut, earned first-team All-Big Ten Conference honors to become the Badgers’ first All-Big Ten pick since 2008.
The 6-foot-3 forward averaged a team-best 16.6 points per game, which ranked fifth in the Big Ten. She also ranked second on the team with 7.3 rebounds per game. Johnson scored in double figures in 22 games, including a career-best 32 points at Northwestern.
She had 20-plus points in 10 games, leading the Badgers in scoring in 14 games. Johnson also had seven double-doubles in 2013-14, pulling down double-figure rebounds in seven games, including a career-best 16 boards vs. Drake.
Johnson led the conference during Big Ten play, shooting 56.8 percent from the field. In all games, the Bellwood, Illinois, native shot 55.1 percent from field, which ranked third in the league.
Johnson played her first two seasons at UConn before transferring to Wisconsin. She sat out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules but practiced with the team. She is one of three starters and 10 letterwinners returning for head coach Bobbie Kelsey in 2014-15.
