MADISON, Wis. – Michala Johnson, a 6-3 forward from Bellwood, Ill., has signed to play women’s basketball at the University of Wisconsin, head coach Bobbie Kelsey announced today. A transfer from the University of Connecticut, Johnson will sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

“The addition of Michala to our program gives us a huge competitive advantage mainly because of the experience she gained while playing two seasons at UConn,” says Kelsey. “Michala was a highly recruited athlete coming out of high school so to have her now as an official Badger will add depth, size, rebounding and scoring to our interior game.

“She will also have the chance to learn our system while sitting out this coming season. Our expectation is for Michala to be ready to step in and contribute right away once she is officially cleared to play. We are very happy she joined our program here at Wisconsin.”

Johnson played two seasons with the Huskies, seeing action in 56 games. She averaged 5.1 minutes per game for her career, tallying 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the field. Johnson had a career-high eight points vs. Pittsburgh as a sophomore and five rebounds vs. Hartford her freshman season.

As a prep, Johnson averaged 16.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game while shooting 72 percent from the floor for Montini High School. She was rated as the No. 46 recruit and the No. 7 power forward by ESPN Hoopgurlz and ranked No. 27 nationally by the All-Star Girls Report and No. 18 by Blue Star.
