Michala Johnson named first-team All-Big Ten

MADISON, Wis. Michala Johnson, a junior on the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team, has been named a first-team All-Big Ten selection by league coaches, the conference office announced Monday. She is the Badgers’ first first-team selection since 2008 and the 10th athlete honored in program history.

Johnson was also named a second-team All-Big Ten pick by conference media while senior Taylor Wurtz was a consensus honorable mention pick and was also named the Badgers’ Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.

Johnson, a 6-3 post, leads the Badgers with 16.5 points per game and upped that to 17.1 points per game in conference games, both which ranked fifth in the league. The transfer from the University of Connecticut started all 28 games in her first season in a Badger uniform. She led the Big Ten in conference games, shooting 56.8 percent from the field, while shooting 55.2 percent in all games, which ranks second in the conference.

She has scored 10-plus points in 21 games and 20-plus points in 11 games this season. The Bellwood, Ill., native also has five double-doubles on the season and ranks second on the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.

Wurtz, a 6-0 guard, ranks second on the UW squad with 12.8 points per game and leads the team with 8.2 rebounds per game. The Brandon, Wis., native has a team-best nine double-doubles this season, scoring 10-or-more points in 19 games and 20-plus points in three games. She also has double-figure rebounds in 10 games. Wurtz has started all 28 games this season and scored her 1,000th career point in the first game of the season.

The Badgers (10-18 overall, 3-13 Big Ten) earned the No. 11 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will take on Minnesota (19-11, 8-8) in the first round on Thursday. Tip-off is approximately 8 p.m. CT from Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
