MADISON, Wis. – Alyssa Karel, a junior on the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) Academic All-District 5 team. Karel was named to the five-player district first team for the second consecutive year. She will now be placed on the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors with the other first-team honorees. The national team will be announced on Feb. 23.
Karel, who is the only Big Ten Conference women’s basketball player to earn first-team honors, leads the Badgers and ranks ninth in the Big Ten with 14.1 points per game. The 5-foot-7 guard has been the UW’s leading scorer in 13 games and has scored in double figures in 18 of 23 games this season, including six games with 20-or-more points. Karel shares the team lead with 1.7 steals per game and also adds 3.0 rebounds per game. Karel has a 3.85 cumulative grade point average in nursing.
She is a three-time member of the dean’s honor list and a two-time member of the dean’s list. Karel is in the nursing honors program at the UW and is also a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. She is a 2009 Academic All-Big Ten honoree and will also be recognized in 2010.
