MADISON, Wis. – Cassie Rochel, a senior on the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team, will redshirt the 2013-14 season, head coach Bobbie Kelsey announced today. The 6-4 post has not played this season due to a lingering back issue.
“The decision was pretty much made for us,” Kelsey explained. “She can’t do some of the things that it would take for her to play and contribute to the team this season. It’s also not necessarily about basketball but about her quality of life and we don’t want to jeopardize that.
“We decided that we would let her, along with her parents and doctors, take this year to see what they can do to help her so she can come back and play. We hope that she can return for her fifth year since she brings a different dimension to what we have on the court. But, our number one priority is her health.”
Rochel led the Big Ten Conference in blocks per game as a junior, averaging 2.67 per contest. She also led the conference in Big Ten-only games, shooting 54.5 percent from field goal range. The Lakeville, Minn., native started 30 games as a junior, leading the Badgers with 9.1 rebounds per game. Rochel had 10-or-more rebounds in 12 games last season. She also added 7.0 points per game while shooting a team-best 50.9 percent from the field.
Rochel has played in 82 games in her career, starting 33. She averages 19.3 minutes, 5.1 rebounds and 4.4 points per game while shooting 51.2 percent in three seasons.
