Wisconsin Head Coach Lisa Stone Quotes
On Wisconsin’s defense: “It has to be [our story] and it can be even better. I thought we gave up a lot of points late. I thought when 42 (Vega Gimeno-Martinez) got going. We did a good job on No. 4 (Angela Pace), I thought Rae Lin (D’Alie) played terrific defense out on top against just an unbelievable player. But again, it was team defense and that was our goal coming in—to rebound the basketball. I don’t know what the numbers are here, but I thought for the most part we were ball-getters, we went and got the ball today. Also, we shot the ball really well from the 3-point line. That might be one of the best shooting percentages we have from the 3-point range, against a stingy zone—they were trying to trap us, they really pulled everybody over. You saw that if we got it swung, we’d try to keep Alyssa (Karel) on the far side and draw attention away and bring it to her. I thought we had abilities to get it to her. I thought Lin (Zastrow) got the ball to her a little bit in the second half and got her free for threes. But again, we want to score more. Nothing’s perfect and we want to be more efficient inside and get stops throughout and maintain our intensity throughout the entire game.”
On going into break with a win: “That’s an exciting time. We wanted to make sure we took care of business today, to come out with some energy. At halftime, I warned them and cautioned them about what happened with St. Bonaventure last year in the second half. We commanded the first half and came out sluggish in the second half. I thought our team responded in terms of energy. We also wanted to make sure that offensively, when you’re playing against a zone, that it doesn’t slow down your defense—I thought our defense was terrific tonight. Again, we’ll shore some things up and cut those turnovers down, which will be important in the Big Ten.
Michigan State, obviously a very good team, we’re playing two of the top ones right away in the Big Ten, and we’re excited about being at home, but our whole goal and our mission is to carry over what we’ve done now in the preseason into the Big Ten season.”
On how the preseason may help in entering the Big Ten season: “To go into some tough places to play—at NC State, at Oregon, at Marquette, some tough places, some big schools on their home courts as well as neutral court performances. But this is a great group of young women I get to go talk to here shortly. I wish them and all of their fans and their families a happy holiday. Get excited for Big Ten because this is going to be a big year for us.”
Robert Morris Head Coach Sal Buscaglia
Wisconsin really does a great job here. They are a fine team from a very good conference. I thought our players played tough but we just didn’t hit shots. You can’t shoot 29 percent and expect to win a ball game. I think our shooting wasn’t on and we didn’t get to the line. We only got to the line eight times and we just didn’t draw fouls. They only had four fouls going against them with five minutes to go, but we just didn’t penetrate well enough to draw enough fouls. We need to get to the free throw line a lot more. And I guess (Wisconsin) is a more of a physical team than we’re used to.
On why Wisconsin defeated Robert Morris:
I think we just didn’t shoot the ball well. I don’t think we shot the ball well and we didn’t get to the free throw line. Our weaknesses were exposed against a good team and I think we have some weaknesses that we have to work on and good team like this will expose us. And they just shot the ball really well especially in the first half when the shot clock was coming down when we were in our zone. It must have been four or five possession where they shot the ball with no time from way downtown and they hit them. I give them a lot of credit. They had some really (good) shots in the first half. We thought we played really good defense on our two defense and our traps and they hit really long shots. I give them good credit. They are a good ball club. You aren’t 10-2 and be a Big Ten club. They’re good, that was a great experience for us.
