MADISON, Wis. --Led by Kevi Luper's 34 points and a strong defensive presence, the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles defeated the Wisconsin women's basketball team 80-63 Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
UW suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 1-1, while ORU remains undefeated at 2-0.
A 3-pointer by Taylor Wurtz gave the Badgers a quick 3-2 lead at the 19:20 mark, but it wouldn't last long. A steal by ORU led to a layup and the 4-3 lead at 18:31. Wisconsin worked the score within one, 22-23, at 10:08 before taking the lead, 26-25, at the 7:28 mark off a jumper by Wurtz.
Oral Roberts' offense found its rhythm, outscoring the Badgers 11-2 in the final 4:39 of the half to take a 41-34 lead into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles returned to the floor and picked up right where they left off, outscoring the Badgers, 8-1 in the first 5:22. A layup by Anya Covington at 14:25 sparked a brief UW rally, but ORU's offense would prove to be too strong.
ORU stretched its lead to 21 points, 68-47, with 9:20 remaining and finished the game with a pair of free throws to earn the 80-63 win.
Thirty-eight of ORU's 80 points came off of turnovers, as the Badgers committed a Kohl Center record 31. The Golden Eagles also set a Kohl Center record with 23 steals.
""Obviously we aren't happy with the outcome of the game, especially our ball security," remarked head coach Bobbie Kelsey. " We didn't have any."
Wisconsin shot 36.1 percent from the field (22-of-61) and went 11-for-29 (37.9 percent) beyond the 3-point line. ORU shot 49.2 percent (31-for-63) and recorded eight 3-pointers (8-for-23, 34.8 percent). The Badgers struggled at the free throw line, shooting just 53.3 percent (8-for-15), while ORU was 10-for-12 (83.3 percent).
Wurtz pulled down a Kohl Center-best 15 rebounds and put up 15 points en route to her fourth career double-double. Ashley Thomas and Jade Davis each added 11 points.
The Badgers outrebounded Oral Roberts 48-26 as Covington added 12 rebounds to Wurtz's game high.
Luper led ORU with 34 points, while Jordan Pyle put up 16 and Georgia Jones recorded 15.
Wisconsin returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when it travels to Marquette (1-0) for a 7 p.m. game at the Al McGuire Center.
