MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s basketball team entered Sunday’s contest against Michigan in need of an offensive spark after posting a season-low point total in its last outing, but could not find the igniter it needed in a 60-44 loss to the Wolverines at the Kohl Center on Sunday afternoon.

“We’re obviously disappointed in our play,” said UW head coach Bobbie Kelsey. “We didn’t have quite the offensive punch we needed. We did play some pretty good defense.  We got a lot of jump balls and blocks and things of that nature, but when we tried to press they got by us. Overall, I thought the kids played hard, it just wasn’t enough.”

 Fast Facts
• Wisconsin outblocks Michigan 7-2
• Two Badgers score double-digits
• UW travels to Michigan State on Thursday, Jan. 30

The Wolverines (14-6 overall, 5-2 Big Ten) jumped out to an early 15-6 lead, but Wisconsin (9-10, 2-5) stayed within striking distance led by seven points each from Michala Johnson and Nicole Bauman. Bauman scored the final basket of the half to bring UW within five, 27-22, heading into the break.

Wisconsin came out of the half on a 9-2 run to take a 31-29 lead over Michigan at the 17:13 mark. The Badgers and Wolverines exchanged leads until a 10-0 run gave Michigan a 43-35 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

The Badgers chipped away at the Wolverine’s lead, getting within four (45-41) on a three-point play by Johnson with just under eight minutes to go.

Michigan extended its lead to 11 twice, before running away with a 16-point victory.

For the third-consecutive game, the Badgers had just two players score in double-figures, with Johnson posting a game-high 15 and Bauman netting a season-high 13.

Michigan was led by Siera Thompson’s 13 points and Shannon Smith’s 12.

UW shot just 33.3 percent (17-of-51), its second-lowest field goal percentage of the season, including a season-low 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range. The Badgers made just five free throws in 10 attempts, recording a season-low 50 percent from the line.

“Nicole (Bauman) hit some shots, and Michala (Johnson) had a couple of nice and-ones,” Kelsey added. “(Johnson’s) got to make her free throws though. She normally makes them, but tonight she kind of struggled at the line. But only her and Morgan got to the free throw line. We’re shooting too many threes. We’ve got to get to the basket.”

Michigan finished the afternoon 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the floor, going 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc. U-M went 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Badgers were outrebounded 39-26 with both teams committing 11 turnovers.

Wisconsin travels to Michigan State on Jan. 30 for a 6 p.m. game in East Lansing, Mich. UW returns to the Kohl Center on Feb. 2 for a 2 p.m. game against Ohio State.
