Player of the Game
Senior Alyssa Karel led all scorers with 23 points, going 7-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. She also shot 6-of-7 from the line. Karel added two rebounds, three assists and two steals in 37 minutes of play.
Stat of the Game
Wisconsin held Penn State, the top 3-point shooting team in the Big Ten, to just 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) from behind the arc. The Nittany Lions came in shooting 43.9 percent (115-of-262) from deep. The 3-point total was the second lowest for Penn State this season as it shot just 2-of-8 from behind the arc in a 70-58 win over Utah on Nov. 25.
The Badgers also held PSU to just 62 points, 22 below its season average of 84.5 points per game average.
Wisconsin put the game away early in the second half, going on an 11-0 run. The Badgers led 39-36 with 17:57 to play in the game and got scoring from five different players to go up 50-36 with 14:37 to go. Penn State would get no closer than nine points the rest of the game.
Senior Lin Zastrow set a career high with six assists, most to post Tara Steinbauer, who scored 18 points.
Wisconsin tallied a season-high 17 assists behind Zastrow. Alyssa Karel and Tara Steinbauer both added three assists.
Last time Wisconsin started the Big Ten 2-0 was during the 2001-02 season. The Badgers downed No. 7 Purdue and won at Iowa to start 2-0. UW went 7-0 to start conference play in 2002.
The Badgers had four players score in double figures for the second game in a row. UW improves to 3-1 when four players score 10-or-more points. Alyssa Karel led all players with 23 points while Tara Steinbauer added 18. Taylor Wurtz chipped in 14 and Jade Davis 10.
Sophomore Taylor Wurtz just missed her third career double-double as she had a game-high nine rebounds to go with her 14 points.
For the third-straight game, the Badgers tallied 15-or-fewer turnovers in a game. Wisconsin had 15 turnovers today while Penn State turned the ball over 19 times.
In its last two games, Wisconsin is 19-of-32 (.594) from 3-point range. The Badgers tied a school record with 11 3-pointers made at Purdue on Dec. 30.
