MADISON, Wis. – Alex Brill’s win in No. 1-ranked Wisconsin’s season-opening meet has earned the junior Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.
Brill claimed the individual title at the Badger Opener last week by covering the 6.3-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 50 seconds. His effort led the Badgers to the team title on their own Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
Wisconsin finished first of the four teams competing with a score of 19 points, as Badgers claimed five of the top six finishing positions.
Brill is among the candidates to fill out the Badgers’ top five after Ryan Collins and Elliot Krause exhausted their eligibility following UW’s run to the national title last season. The Madison, Wis., native is UW’s first Big Ten athlete of the week since Reed Connor was tabbed on Oct. 4, 2011.
The Badgers return to competition Saturday by taking part in the Stony Brook Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y. The race is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (CT).
