MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s cross country team checked in at No. 11 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason NCAA Division I Cross Country national coaches’ poll, while the Badger women were ranked No. 16, the organization announced Tuesday.
The national rankings come on the heels of the regional ranks that were released by the USTFCCCA Monday, as the men’s program was ranked second in the Great Lakes Region while the women’s team was picked fourth.
The men’s squad returns All-American Malachy Schrobilgen, who last year became only the second UW freshman to win a Big Ten title. The Badgers also feature an impressive senior duo of Michael Van Voorhis, who was the team’s top-finisher at the 2013 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, and Alex Hatz, who finished third for UW at each of the championship meets last season.
Emma-Lisa Murphy leads the UW women this season, as she earned All-America honors at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Sophomore Sarah Disanza finished in the top-two for UW in every race she competed at during the cross country season and finished third in the junior race at the USA Cross Country Championships earlier this year.
Wisconsin opens the 2014 season at home with the Badger Opener on Sept. 5 at the Zimmer Championship course. Admission is free for the 5 p.m. meet.
