InterMat College Rankings
MADISON, Wis. – InterMat Wrestling announced its NCAA Division I preseason team and individual rankings and the Wisconsin wrestling program was slated at No. 4 in the nation and seven wrestlers were ranked in the top 20 at their respective weights. Included in the individual rankings at 165 lbs. was defending 2010 NCAA Champion Andrew Howe, who was picked No. 1.
Also placing in the top 20 in their respective weight classes were No. 3 Tyler Graff (133 lbs.), No. 19 Cole Schmitt (149 lbs.), No. 17 Ben Jordan (174 lbs.), No. 12 Travis Rutt (184 lbs.), No. 2 Trevor Brandvold (197 lbs.) and No. 16 Eric Bugenhagen (Hwt.).
No. 3 Tyler Graff, 133 lbs.
Graff enters the season after placing fifth at the NCAA Division I Championships, earning All-America honors. Andrew Hochstrasser of Boise State and Oklahoma State’s Jordan Oliver were tabbed at the first and second spots, respectively.
No. 19 Cole Schmitt, 149 lbs.
Schmitt moves up a weight class in 2010-11 after serving as Wisconsin’s starter at 141 lbs. last year. His No. 19 ranking is the highest ranking he has received during his career at UW after he was tabbed No. 20 last year.
No. 1 Andrew Howe, 165 lbs.
Howe enters the season after finishing 2009-10 with a perfect record. Last year, the junior garnered a 37-0 record after placing first at the NCAA Championships and winning his second Big Ten Championship title at 165 lbs.
No. 17 Ben Jordan, 174 lbs.
After redshirting and finishing 10-4 in open tournaments, Jordan enters the 2010-11 season as the Badgers’ probable starter at 174 lbs. Jordan spent his freshman season as just one of four true freshmen to start for Wisconsin, notching 16 dual points for the Badgers. Mack Lewnes of Cornell was tabbed at No. 1 with Virginia’s Chris Henrich at No. 2.
No. 12 Travis Rutt, 184 lbs.
Rutt enters the season in the No. 12 position after ranking as high as 16th last year. He is one of the Badgers’ returning starters after finishing fifth at the Big Ten Championships and slating a 1-2 record at the national championships last year.
No. 2 Trevor Brandvold, 197 lbs.
Brandvold enters his final season with the Badgers after garnering a Big Ten Championship title and placing sixth at the NCAA Division I Championships. The 2010 All-American is ranked No. 2 behind Cornell’s Cam Simaz.
No. 16 Eric Bugenhagen, Heavyweight
Bugenhagen returns to the mat after representing the Badgers last year as the heavyweight starter and placing fourth at the Big Ten Championships. Lehigh’s Zach Rey and Jarod Trice of Central Michigan notched the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
