MADISON, Wis. -- Four Wisconsin wrestlers are set to compete at the Men’s FILA Junior World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Saturday, May 26. Frank Cousins, Matthew Kelliher, Connor Medbery and Jesse Thielke will take the mat for a chance to earn the right to represent the United States at the 2012 FILA Junior World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, Sept. 4-9.

“It will be a great experience for them,” head coach Barry Davis said. “Any time you spend time at the Olympic Training Center training with that level with of athlete, get a chance to make the Junior World team and travel overseas, is fantastic. It shows the depth of our program, how young we are and how good these guys really are.”

FILA Junior wrestlers are athletes who are 17-20 years old. On the FILA Junior level, a returning FILA Junior World medalist earns the right to sit out of the challenge tournament, moving right into the best-of-three championship series at the FILA Junior World Team Trials. This year, however, there are no eligible returning FILA Junior World medalists.

Therefore, the winners of the 2012 FILA Junior Nationals in the eight FILA Junior World weight classes, held in Madison, April 13-15, advance directly to the best-of-three championship series.

The FILA Junior World Team Trials is not an open event. Athletes must qualify to participate, based upon their placement at the 2012 FILA Junior National Championships, as well as achieving specific qualifying standards from other major competitions.

Medbery qualified for the championships with a third-place finish in the 120 KG freestyle at nationals in Madison, while Cousins finished second at 79 KG and Kelliher finished fifth at 60 KG.

Thielke is eligible to compete as a member of the 2011 U.S. FILA Junior World Team.

“You get a chance to put four guys on the Junior World team,” Davis continued. “It says a lot about your program and the direction that it is going.”
