MADISON, Wis. -- Down to his last chance to qualify for the 2013 U.S. World Team Trials, Wisconsin assistant coach Kyle Ruschell knew what he had to do.
Competing at the Northern Plains Regional Championships in Waterloo, Iowa, this past weekend, Ruschell had to win the tournament to qualify for the World Team Trials. And that's just what he did, wrestling to a perfect 5-0 record to capture the 66 kg/145.5 lbs., freestyle title.
The Crittenden, Ky., native faced tough competition in his weight class on the way to his first-place finish, including defeating Minnesota All-American Nick Dardanes by decision in the championships match, 4-3, 3-0.
Ruschell now joins three other Badgers, Tyler Graff, Jesse Thielke and fellow assistant coach Trevor Brandvold, as qualifiers for the World Team Trials, which will take place June 20-23 in Stillwater, Okla.
