OMAHA, Neb.--Five Badgers won their opening round match after the first session of the 2010 NCAA Division I Championships was completed. Among the victories were two pins and a major decision.

Wisconsin is currently tied for third in the team standings with 15 points.

No. 8 seed and redshirt freshman Tyler Graff won his opening round match at 133 lbs., by a 16-6 major decision, over Penn’s Bryan Ortenzio. Graff scored seven takedowns, an escape and riding tie in the bout. He will now wrestle on No. 9 seeded Steve Bell of Maryland in the second round later tonight. Graff has defeated Bell twice already this year.

No. 4 seed and Senior Kyle Ruschell shutout Navy’s Glenn Shober, 4-0, at 149 lbs. Ruschell scored a takedown, an escape and riding time to win the match. He will face Torsten Gillespie of Edinboro in the second round of competition.

Top seeded sophomore Andrew Howe extended his record this season to 33-0 with a victory over Chad Porter of Liberty at 165 lbs. He showed why he's the top wrestler in his weight class in the opening round, pinning his opponent at 2:03. Howe will take on Cornell’s Justin Kerber in session two. He defeated Kerber earlier this season by a 12-4 major decision.

Sophomore Travis Rutt has earned a matchup against No. 1 seed Kirk Smith of Boise State after defeating Nathan Schiedel of Binghamton, 7-3, at 184 lbs. Rut scored three takedowns and an escape in the decision. Smith has defeated Rutt twice this season.

No. 5 seed junior Trevor Brandvold joined fellow Wisconsin Big Ten Champion Howe, by pinning his opponent in the first match at 197 lbs. Brandvold’s victory against Brent Jones of Virginia, which came at the 2:17 mark, puts him up against No. 12 Brent Haynes of Missouri. The two have not faced each other this year.

Redshirt freshman Cole Schmitt dropped his opening round match at 141 lbs., 6-2, to No. 10 seed Tyler Nauman of Pittsburgh. Schmitt scored a takedown in the matchup and will wrestle North Dakota State’s Ryan Adams in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Junior Eric Bugenhagen dropped his opening round match to No. 1 David Zabriskie of Iowa State, 6-2, in the opening round of the heavyweight division. Bugenhagen scored two escapes but was knocked down consolation bracket where he will face Eddie Bordas of Rider.

Session II beings tonight at 6:30 p.m. (CT) with the second round of the Championships, as well as the pigtails and opening round of the consolation bracket. Like Session I, coverage can be found at NCAA.com.
