CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Wisconsin heavyweight Connor Medbery was honored as the 2013 Big Ten Wrestling Freshman of the Year Sunday, following the conclusion of the Big Ten championships at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill.
The redshirt freshman is the fourth Badger to win the award, joining Andrew Howe (2009), Jeff Walter (1992) and Keith Davison (1990).
Medbery had a standout season, becoming one of the premier heavyweight wrestlers both in the Big Ten conference and nationally. The Loveland, Colo., native finished the season with an overall 22-4 record, including 13-1 in dual meets and 7-1 against Big Ten heavyweight competition, including five wins over ranked conference opponents.
The Loveland, Colo., native also had a pair of top-five finishes at national tournaments this year, placing fifth at the Cliff Keen Invite in November and third at the Midlands Championships in December.
Next up for the freshman is a trip to the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship, which will be held Mar. 21-23 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
