Final Session I & II Brackets & Team Standings
EVANSTON, Ill.--A pair of Wisconsin wins on Sunday could lead to an all Badger title bout at the 50th Midlands Championships, as redshirt junior Tyler Graff and freshman Jesse Thielke are both one win away from the championship match at 133 lbs.
Graff and Thielke, along with Isaac Jordan (Unattached, 157 lbs.), completed an undefeated day on Saturday at Welsch-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
UW also has Rylan Lubeck (Unattached, 141 lbs.), Scott Liegel (174 lbs.), Jackson Hein (197 lbs.) and Connor Medbery (Hwt.) still in contention for third-place titles.
After the first two sessions, Wisconsin sits in a tie for 13th place with 32.5 team points.
Making his season-debut at 133 lbs., Graff dominated on the tournament's first day, going 4-0 including wins by fall, major decision and technical fall. The third-seeded Graff will look to continue that success in the 133 lbs. semifinals Sunday against Iowa's second-seeded Daniel Dennis for a spot in the first-place match.
Wrestling unattached, Thielke joins Graff in the 133 lbs. semifinals after a 3-0 first day that included an upset of the top-seeded 133 lbs. wrester in the tournament, Central Michigan's Scotti Sentes. Thielke will look to earn a spot in the title match against fifth-seeded Leon Mango from Stanford.
Lubeck is still in contention for a third-place title at 141 lbs. after putting together a 3-1 record on day one. Lubeck will wrestle in the consolation rounds against fifth-seeded Evan Henderson from North Carolina.
At 157 lbs., Jordan wrestled to a perfect 3-0 mark and, like Graff and Thielke, finds himself in the semifinals. Jordan knocked off the Midlands' No. 12, No. 5 and No. 4 seeds to reach the semifinals, but it doesn't get any easier for him tomorrow. The Urbana, Ohio, native will wrestle Northwestern's top-seeded Jason Welch for a place in the first-place match.
Liegel finished with a 4-1 mark at 174 lbs. to earn the right to continue competing. He will look to wrestle his was into contention for a third-place title in the consolation rounds. Liegel's day leads off with a match-up against top-seeded Jordan Blanton of Illinois.
Hein, the No. 11 seed at 197 lbs., went 3-1 Saturday and will also seek a third-place title in the consolation rounds. Hein will face Old Dominion's Kevin Beazley to kick off his day.
At heavyweight, the seventh-seeded Medbery was one win away from joining Graff, Thielke and Jordan in the semifinals, but lost in the quarterfinals to Northwestern's Michael McMullen, the tournament's No. 2 seed. Medbery will wrestle for third-place title in the consolation rounds against eighth-seeded Ernest James of Edinboro.
Session III (consolation rounds, semifinals and seventh-place matches) of the Midlands Championships begins Sunday at noon and the final session (first-place, third-place and fifth place matches) will be held at 7 p.m.
The final session of the Midlands Championships will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network starting at 7 p.m.
