MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin wrestling team hosted its annual Intra-Squad Scrimmage in front of 337 fans at the UW Field House Thursday night. The Red team took on the White team and won in dominating fashion, claiming nine of the 10 matches in its 33-4 victory.

 Fast Facts
• The Badgers totalled five extra point wins
• Hein scored the only pin of the night
• Red team earned four shutout victories

While the Red team came away with the victory, assistant coach Kyle Ruschell acknowledged everyone’s hard work.

“Everybody comes out here to wrestle,” Ruschell said.” They all want to make the starting lineup, so they all put their best effort out there.”

Both true freshman Austin Hietpas and redshirt freshman Alex Yde wrestled in two matches in the scrimmage, resulting in a staggered order of weight classes. In total, the Badgers amassed five victories by extra points.

The scrimmage began at 133 lbs. where redshirt junior Tom Kelliher defeated Hietpas by an 11-0 major decision. Kelliher, who started at 125 lbs. last season, scored three takedowns, three nearfall points, an escape and 4:28 of riding time in the bout. Kelliher’s victory put the Red team on top, 4-0.

Redshirt sophomore Shawn Perry then took on Yde at 157 lbs. Perry earned the Red team its second shutout, defeating Yde by a 6-0 decision, scoring two takedowns, an escape and 3:36 of riding time in the match. The Red team’s lead was then extended to 7-0 as a result of the decision.

At 141 lbs., true freshman Matt Kelliher earned the White team its only win of the night, defeating redshirt freshman Thomas Glenn by a 10-2 major decision. Glenn scored the first points of the match with a takedown 15 seconds into the bout, but Kelliher scored 10 unanswered points following the takedown. Kelliher narrowed the Red team’s lead to 7-4 with two takedowns, a reversal, three nearfall points and an escape.

No. 17 Ben Jordan then extended the Red team’s lead to 10-4 with a 9-6 decision over redshirt sophomore, and Badger newcomer, Scott Liegel. Jordan led 7-4 entering the final period, but Liegel escaped after choosing down to start. Jordan then scored his third takedown of the match to seal the victory. Jordan earned three takedowns, a reversal and an escape, while Liegel scored one takedown and an escape in the bout.

The 174 lbs. matchup featured another close bout between redshirt freshmen Frank Cousins and Dylan Iczkowski. Cousins entered the third period with a 5-1 lead, but was reversed just 17 seconds into the period. Cousins then came back with a reversal of his own to clinch a 7-4 victory over Iczkowski. The win gave the Red team a 13-4 lead.

At 184 lbs., redshirt freshman Timmy McCall notched the Red team’s third shutout victory over redshirt freshman Courtland Harrison, 8-0. McCall scored three takedowns, a reversal and an escape in the major decision that gave the Red team a 17-4 lead.

Redshirt sophomore Jackson Hein then earned the only fall of the night at 197 lbs., pinning redshirt freshman Sebastien Levin at 1:10. Hein’s pin extended the Red team’s lead to 23-4.

“It felt great,” Hein said. “We’ve been working a lot in the series to underhook and beat the back. It felt good.”

Redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin earned the Red team its fourth-straight victory with a 6-2 decision against true freshman Brock Horwath. Tobin scored two takedowns, an escape and 4:13 of riding time, giving his team a 26-4 edge.

Hietpas returned to the mat at 125 lbs. where he faced junior Shane McQaude. McQuade earned the Red team’s fourth win by extra points, defeating Hietpas by a 12-2 major decision. McQaude scored four takedowns, three nearfall points and 1:09 of riding time in the bout, which gave his team a 30-4 lead.

In the final match of the night, No. 16 redshirt junior Cole Schmitt defeated Yde by a 7-2 decision at 149 lbs. Yde was able to score one takedown in the bout, but Schmitt’s two takedowns, two escapes and 1:04 of riding time proved too much to handle. Schmitt’s victory gave the Red team a 33-4 victory of the White team.

The Badgers return to the UW Field House on Nov. 13 to host Loras, Wartburg and UW-Whitewater in the Badger Duals beginning at 11 a.m.

“Everybody wrestled their hardest,” Ruschell said. “There are a lot of areas we need to work on. We were sloppy in some places, we know what they need to do.”
