WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin wrapped up the 2012 Big Ten Championships with an eighth place finish and NCAA championship bid to lead the Wisconsin wrestling team over the weekend in West Lafayette, Ind. 

Tobin took eighth place at heavyweight after losing to Nebraska’s No. 4 seed Tucker Lane by a 3-0 decision. Tobin posted a 1-3 record in the Big Ten championships and takes an 8-16 record to the NCAAs.

Freshman Austin Hietpas took eighth place at 125 lbs. after falling to Ohio State’s No. 6 seed Johnni DiJulius by a 17-5 major decision. Hietpas finished the Big Ten championships with a 1-3 record and ends the 2011-12 season with a 1-17 overall record.

Redshirt freshman Frank Cousins dropped his ninth place match to Indiana’s No. 10 seed Ryan Leblanc by a 7-2 decision in his extra match at 174 lbs., eliminating him from an automatic qualifying bid for the NCAA championships. Cousin’s extra match yesterday and this afternoon do not count towards his record. Cousins ends his season with a 10-15 record as Wisconsin’s 174 lbs. starter.

Wisconsin finished the Big Ten championships in 12th place with nine team points. Penn State took the title for the second-straight year with 149 points, followed by Minnesota with 134 points and Iowa with 126 points.

The 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships take place on March 15-17 in St. Louis, Mo. Wisconsin senior Ben Jordan (23-10) is expected to receive a 165 lbs. at-large bid, which will be announced on Wednesday, March 7.
