CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The No. 4 Wisconsin wrestling team earned a 42-3 dual victory over South Dakota State in its opening contest of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday. In addition to a  SDSU forfeit (125 lbs.) and Jackrabbit default (133 lbs.), the Badgers slated seven victories including two by fall, one by technical fall and one by major decision. With the win, the Badgers' now boast a 6-0 overall dual record.

 Fast Facts
• Perry, Howe and Graff move up one weight class
• Badgers record two wins by fall, one MD and one TF5
• UW now 6-0 overall in dual action

Wisconsin's 6-0 start to the season is the program's best since the 2006-2007 squad opened the season with 15-straight wins.

The Badgers made some adjustments to their usual lineup, forcing Tyler Graff (usually 133 lbs.), Shawn Perry (usually 157 lbs.) and Andrew Howe (usually 165 lbs.) to move up one weight class against South Dakota State. The trio adapted well, with all three capturing victories over their opponents at 141 lbs., 165 lbs., and 174 lbs., respectively.

Also leading the Cardinal and White with victories were Cole Schmit (149 lbs.), Travis Rutt (184 lbs.), Derrick Borlie (197 lbs.) and Eric Bugenhagen (Hwt.).

With forfeits at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., Wisconsin began the dual with a 12-0 advantage over the Jackrabbits.

At 141 lbs., Graff captured Wisconsin's lone technical fall of the dual with an 18-3 win over the Jackrabbit's Tyler Johnson at 5:18. Buoying Graff's 15-point winning-margin were six takedowns, including three in the first period to help Wisconsin to a 17-0 lead over SDSU.

Before pinning South Dakota State's James Hamilton, Schmitt recorded three takedowns and two nearfalls in the matchup, while holding Hamilton to just a single escape. After one last takedown, Schmitt ended the match early when he pinned Hamilton at 5:31.

At 157 lbs., Wisconsin's Kalvin York dropped a 5-2 decision to SDSU's Nick Flynn. York's points were earned in the first period when he opened the match with a takedown.

Perry represented the Badgers at 165 lbs. for the first time this season. Perry earned a 7-2 victory over SDSU's John Nething II with two takedowns, one nearfall and riding time to help the Badgers lead 26-3.

Although he usually wrestles at 165 lbs., Howe obtained the Badgers' second fall of the day at 174 lbs. to help Wisconsin take a 32-3 advantage over the Jackrabbits. Howe was leading Rasmussen, 4-1 before pinning him at 1:15.

Rutt extended his record to 15-1 on the season when he helped the Badgers with a 12-1 major decision over South Dakota State's Scott Elliott. Rutt's large margin of victory helped Wisconsin take a 36-3 lead over SDSU.

Borlie extended Wisconsin's lead to 39-3 when he captured a 7-1 decision over SDSU's Cord Willers. Borlie's seven points were obtained by two takedowns, one reversal and riding time.

Sealing Wisconsin's 32-3 win over South Dakota State was Bugenhagen at heavyweight. In a close matchup, Bugenhagen earned his 12th victory of the season (excluding open tournaments) with a 4-2 decision over the Jackrabbit's Kevin Kelly.

Graff, Rutt and Howe are now 6-0 overall in dual action.

The Badgers return to the mat at 3 p.m. (CT) today to face off against American in their second dual of the day. In American's first dual of the tournament, they upset No. 11-ranked Oregon State, 21-19.
