MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin senior Reed Connor and sophomore Andrew Brekke earned spots on the Capital One Academic All-District Men's Track and Cross Country team for District 6, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
A three-time Big Ten champion in track, Connor was named the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after helping the Badgers win their second-straight indoor conference crown. A native of Houston, Connor claimed the title in the 3000 meters at the Big Ten indoor meet and was runner-up in the 5000. Connor also played an instrumental part in helping UW win the Big Ten outdoor championship, as the senior won the 10,000 meters in a personal-best time of 29:06.10 while finishing runner-up in the 5000 meters.
During his UW career, he helped the Badgers win four Big Ten team titles in track, four more in cross country and the 2011 NCAA cross country championship. Connor graduated earlier this month with degrees in marketing and real estate and urban land economics and maintained a grade-point average of 3.43.
A native of La Crosse, Brekke has won two individual titles this year in the shot put. The sophomore set a personal-best mark in the hammer throw with a heave of 179 feet, 6 inches, which ranks seventh in program history. A biochemistry major with a 3.68 GPA, Brekke earned eight top-five finishes in the shot put, the hammer throw and discus this season.
Connor and Brekke are now candidates for Capital One Academic All-America honors, with the prestigious national squad selected from the pool of all-district selections. Members of the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America team for cross country and track will be selected by a vote of CoSIDA's Academic All-America Committee and will be announced in June.
