MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 9-ranked Wisconsin men’s track and field team will be very busy this week, competing at three separate meets.
Wisconsin will send athletes to the 43rd-annual Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Combined Events in Azusa, Calif., the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and the Musco Twilight Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
Multi-event competition will finally begin for UW when three Badgers compete in either the Mt. SAC Relays section or California Invitational section of the decathlon on Wednesday and Thursday.
Sophomore Zach Ziemek, who earlier this year finished second in the Big Ten and fifth at the NCAA championships in the indoor heptathlon, will compete in the Mt. SAC Relays decathlon, beginning Wednesday at 3 p.m. (CT) and continuing Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
At the meet last year, Ziemek did not finish the decathlon but tallied 6,755 points through nine events. He went on to place 12th at the Big Ten championships with 7,072 points.
Redshirt freshmen Charlie Foss and Ben Schreib will make their debut in the decathlon when they compete in the California Invitational section, beginning Wednesday at 1 p.m. (CT) and resuming Thursday at 1 p.m.
A number of Wisconsin distance runners will also be traveling to California for the Mt. SAC Relays. The elite meet begins Thursday and runs through Saturday.
On Thursday, Alex Brill will compete in the 3000 steeplechase. The junior finished fifth in the event at the 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in a personal-best time of 8:37.62.
Friday will be highlighted by a trio of Badgers scheduled to run in the 1500 meters, as Rob Finnerty, Alex Hatz and Austin Mudd will compete in the event. Mudd knows what it’s like to win at the Mt. SAC Relays, as the sophomore claimed the 800 meters last year in 1:47.68, the fifth-fastest time in UW history.
Finnerty is no stranger to the 1500 meters. The senior won the event at last year’s NCAA West Preliminary Round meet and placed fifth at the NCAA outdoor championships.
Also on Friday, senior Elliot Krause will compete in the 5000 meters. Earlier this year, Krause finished sixth in the event at the Big Ten indoor meet and 12th at the NCAA indoor championships.
A third group of Badgers will head to Iowa on Saturday for the Musco Twilight Invitational. Field events will begin at 1 p.m. (CT) with action on the track starting at 6 p.m.
The 400, the 800, the 1500 and the 5000 meters are loaded with Wisconsin entries. Drew Simmons, Tyler Woloszyk, Babatunde Awosika and Brett Hartman will compete in the 400 meters, while Austin Mudd, Zach Mellon, William Ottow and Tim Hucke will run the 800 meters. The 1500 meters will feature Reed Connor, Danny Buechel, Matt McKenna and Michael Van Voorhis. In the 5000 meters, McKenna, Jacob Naylor, Neal Berman and Michael Brice are scheduled to compete.
Japheth Cato will compete both on and off the track. The junior is entered in the 110 hurdles, the 4x100 relay, the high jump and the pole vault.
In the throws, Danny Block will participate in the shot put and discus. Scott Erickson and Andrew Brekke will join Block in the discus and are also listed in the hammer throw.
The meet will conclude with a pair of Wisconsin entries in the 4x400 relay.
