MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 11-ranked Wisconsin men’s track and field will compete in one final tune-up before next week’s 2013 Big Ten Indoor Championships, when the Badgers host the Red & White Open on Friday.
The annual meet begins at 2:30 p.m. inside Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell). Admission is free.
The competition is set to begin with field events at 2:30 p.m., while races on the track begin at 3:30 p.m. Live results from the Badger Track Classic will be available at UWBadgers.com. No team scores will be kept.
With the Big Ten championships only one week away, the Red & White Open is the Badgers’ last opportunity to compete before they travel to the conference meet, which will take place at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23.
Heading into Friday, several Badgers enter the competition nationally ranked.
Multi-event athlete Japheth Cato will compete in several events on Friday in preparation for next weekend’s heptathlon. The junior ranks third in the nation in the heptathlon after earning a score of 6,024 points at the Frank Sevigne Invitational on Feb. 2. He is one of three collegians to have scored over 6,000 points this season.
Additionally, Cato enters the weekend ranked 29th in the long jump and 33rd in the pole vault, and will compete in both events, along with the high jump and 60 meters.
Joining Cato in the long jump are sophomore Zach Ziemek and redshirt freshmen Charlie Foss and Ben Schreib, while Paul Annear and redshirt freshman Jason Tiedt will go head-to-head with Cato in the high jump.
In the throwing events, sophomore Scott Erickson enters the weekend nationally ranked in the weight throw after recording a mark of 62 feet, 1 inch at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational on Jan. 19. Erickson is ranked 48th in the nation.
Junior Danny Block heads into the competition ranked 13th nationally in the shot put, after he recorded a mark of 61-11 at the Cyclone Classic on Saturday, Feb. 9.
In addition to Erickson and Block, freshman Andrew Bartsch and redshirt freshman Andrew Brekke will also compete for the UW in the weight throw and shot put.
On the track, a number of Badgers will be competing in the 3000 meters, including senior Elliot Krause and juniors Jacob Naylor and Alex Brill.
Seven Badgers will be competing in the mile, including sophomore Alex Hatz, senior Rob Finnerty and junior Neal Berman.
Also competing for Wisconsin are sophomore Austin Mudd, junior Brett Hartman and freshman Spencer Turriff in the 400 meters and Hatz in the 800 meters.
Several Badgers are also entered in the 60 hurdles, 60 meters and 600 meters.
