MADISON, Wis. -- For the second week in a row, the No. 12-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team will compete on its home track inside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell) when the Badgers host the Wisconsin Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
The Badgers will compete against Illinois State, Northern Iowa, Northern Michigan, Southeast Missouri State and UW-Whitewater.
The meet begins with the men's pentathlon at 1 p.m. Friday. In addition, an exhibition discus event will be held on the turf field inside the adjacent McClain Center beginning at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, field events begin at 11 a.m., while action on the track starts at 11:30. Admission to the meet is free.
Senior Japheth Cato will compete in his first multi-event competition of the season when he takes aim at the Big Ten record of 4,097 points in the pentathlon. Cato smashed the Badgers’ school mark in winning the event at last year’s Wisconsin Elite Invitational with a nation-leading score of 4,040.
Former teammate David Grzesiak also broke Joe Detmer’s school record at last year’s meet, finishing runner-up to Cato with 3,993 points.
The five-event pentathlon consists of the 60 hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1000 meters.
Sophomore Austin Mudd will make his season debut by running in the 800 meters. Mudd earned second-team All-America honors in the distance medley relay indoors and then ran the fifth-fastest 800 meters in school history with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 47.59 seconds in the semifinals of last year’s NCAA outdoor championships.
Senior Zach Mellon will also be making his season debut. The All-American and UW school record-holder at 800 meters will compete in the mile on Saturday. He finished second in the mile at last year’s meet with a personal-best time of 4:03.38.
