MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s track and field team, in the midst of preparing for the fast-approaching championship season, began competition at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., on Friday.
UW sprinters opened the first day of competition with some notable performances.
Junior Japheth Cato started the day off well for the Badgers, winning the 110 hurdles in 14.36 seconds. Sophomore Matt Widule was not far behind, crossing the finish line second in 14.72.
Redshirt freshmen Charlie Foss and Ben Schreib also competed in the event, placing fifth in 16.06 and sixth in 17.01, respectively.
Not to be outdone, senior Zach Mellon also won an event, finishing first in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 54.42 seconds.
A trio of Badgers competed in the 200 meters, led by Babatunde Awosika. The junior earned a runner-up finish in a personal-best time of 21.66 seconds. Sophomore Garret Payne placed third in 21.68 and senior Grant Bughman, competing in the event for the first time as a collegian, was seventh in 22.54.
The duo of Schreib and Foss, fresh off the decathlon at last week’s California Invitational, were entered in the long jump and pole vault. Schreib finished fourth in both events, leaping a personal-record distance of 21 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the long jump and clearing a height of 13-7 3/4 in the pole vault.
Foss finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20-11 1/4 and fifth in the pole vault with a height of 13-1 3/4.
Senior Danny Buechel completed the 1500 meters in 3:54.06 to finish third.
Competition resumes tomorrow with field events at 1 p.m. (CT) and preliminary sections of the 100-meter dash and the 110 hurdles beginning at 2:30 p.m. Wisconsin will showcase both its 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams as well.
The Triton Invitational concludes tomorrow in La Jolla, Calif., with UW entries in the invitational sections of the discus and shot put. Danny Block and Alex Thompson will join Brekke and Erickson in the discus, while Block and Brekke will compete in the shot put.
