GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 6 Wisconsin men’s track and field team won the distance medley relay at the 2014 Florida Relays on Saturday at the Percy Beard Track.
The quartet of freshman Carl Hirsch, senior Drew Simmons, and juniors Alex Hatz and Austin Mudd clocked a time of 9 minutes, 47.88 seconds to win the event. Hirsch led off the relay with a time of 3:01.5 in the 1200 meters, while Simmons followed with a 400 meter time of 48.2. Hatz’s time of 1:50.9 in the 800 meters put Mudd in great position, as Mudd clocked a time of 4:06.5 in the 1600 meters.
Senior Japheth Cato won the pole vault soaring 17 feet, 0.25 inches and won in a jump off against Craig Howard of Buffalo.
Fellow senior Danny Block enjoyed a successful outing for the Badgers, competing in the invitational sections of the discus and the shot put. Block finished third in the discus with a heave of 180-2 and ninth in the shot put with a throw of 56-10.
Senior Collin Taylor placed 10th in the high jump with a clearance of 6-9.
The Badgers have athletes compete at the Rex Foster Invitational in Whitewater, Wis., on Sunday. The first event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
