TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The No. 7-ranked Wisconsin men’s track and field team ran outside for the first time Friday, marking the beginning of the outdoor season at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Senior Grant Bughman had the best finish of the day, finishing fourth in the 400 meters in 49.15 seconds. Bughman set a new personal record by more than a second, besting his mark of 50.17 set in 2011.
The quartet of Babatunde Awosika, Tyler Woloszyk, Garret Payne and Tim Hucke matched Bughman’s fourth-place finish in the sprint medley relay, crossing the finish line in 3:29.11.
In the 100 meters, senior Matt Kerswill placed 18th with a time of 11.31 seconds. Sophomore teammate Matt Widule finished close behind in 21st, clocking in at 11.41.
In the field events, sophomore Scott Erickson and redshirt freshman Andrew Brekke competed in the hammer throw. Erickson placed sixth with a personal-best distance of 182 feet, 4 inches. The mark surpassed his pervious long of 176-2 from last year.
Brekke finished 10th with a throw of 168-9, falling just two inches shy of his career-best mark.
The Alabama Relays continue Saturday with field events opening at 10 a.m. (CT) and running events starting at 5 p.m. The Badgers will compete in numerous events, including the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
All-Americans Japheth Cato and Zach Ziemek will compete in the long jump, while Ziemek will also participate in the javelin throw.
