MADISON, Wis. -- The 2014 indoor season officially began for the No. 4-ranked Wisconsin men’s track and field team Friday with the Badger Indoor Open at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell) and freshman Riley Budde made the most of his opportunity.
Budde, competing unattached in his first collegiate meet, won both the weight throw and shot put with heaves of 52 feet, 1 1/4 inches and 50-8 1/4, respectively. The Beaver Dam, Wis., native, who finished third in the shot put and fourth in the discus at the state meet as a senior, also participated in the exhibition discus throw, placing fifth with a toss of 165-7.
Additionally, multi-event athletes and redshirt sophomores Ben Schreib and Charlie Foss competed in preparation for the pentathlon later this season. In the high jump, Schreib won by clearing 6-5, while Foss placed second with a leap of 6-2 3/4. Foss also earned a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 13-5 1/4. Teammate Jesse Johnson won the event with a clearance of 14-5 1/4.
Juniors Alex Thompson and Scott Erickson, along with sophomores Andrew Bartsch and Andrew Brekke, competed in the discus alongside Budde. Thompson placed second (169-0) and Erickson finished third (168-0), while Bartsch was sixth (159-7) and Brekke placed eighth (152-7).
Competition continues tomorrow at The Shell when Wisconsin takes on Missouri in a dual meet. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT) with running events slated to start at 11 a.m. Live results will be available at UWBadgers.com.
