Senior Nolan Polley won both of his matches on Sunday as he advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Polley, a native of Lexington, Ky., took care of his first opponent in straight sets. Polley bested Sebastian Gallego of Minnesota 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Thomas Richter of Indiana was his opponent. As he has done all tournament, Polley did not a drop a set and he cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Polley has dominated throughout the tournament as none of his four opponents so far have won more than three games in any match.
Sophomore Michael Muskievicz (Homewood, Ill.) and freshman Peter Marrack (Mississauga, Ontario) each made it to the round of 16, but neither was able to advance any further. Muskievicz fell to Jason Jung of Michigan 7-5, 6-2, while Marrack lost to Richter 6-2, 6-3.
Wisconsin also had five Badgers competing in consolation play on Sunday.
Sophomore Luke Rassow-Kantor (Westport, Conn.) advanced all the way to the tournaments consolation semifinals. After beating Juan Gomez of Northwestern 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round, Rassow-Kantor knocked off another Wildcat in Peter Rispoli 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(4). In the round of 16, Rassow-Kantor defeated Jake Toole of Penn State 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(6). He then proceeded to beat Mike DePietro of Michigan 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Advancing to the round of 16 was junior Gian Hodgson (Savaneta, Aruba). Hodgson won his opening round match against John Stratton of Michigan State 6-6 (4-3) following Stratton having to retire. In the second round, he beat John Allare, also of Michigan State, 6-3, 6-3. Hodgsons match in the round of 16 against Dominic Ozanne of Ohio State was not played.
Sophomore Michael Dierberger was knocked out in the second round of the consolation bracket. After receiving a bye in the first round, Dierberger was beaten by Reinoud Haal of Iowa 6-2, 6-7(5), 1-0(16).
Senior Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) fell in straight sets in the first round to Alex Sanborn of Northwestern 6-0, 7-5.
Fellow senior Felipe Bellido (Lima, Peru) also lost in straight sets in the first round by a score of 6-0, 7-5. He lost to Peter Antons of Indiana.
The Badgers return to action tomorrow morning for the final day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Polley will face off against Bart van Monskou of Iowa in the main draw semifinals, while Rassow-Kantor will take on Haal in the consolation draw semifinals. Both matches are set to start at 8:00 a.m. (CT). Should either player win, the championship match would be played at 10:30 a.m. (CT).
