MADISON, Wis. - Freshman Oskar Wikberg highlighted the Big Ten Indoor Tennis Tournament with a second place finish this weekend at Nielsen Stadium in Madison, Wis.
Wikberg impressed with strong performances in both singles and doubles play, making it to the doubles quarterfinals with partner Jakhongir Jalalov before competing in the singles final against Raleigh Smith of Northwestern on Monday.
"He's competing for every point, he's a fighter," said coach Greg Van Emburgh about Wikberg. "He's definitely a special player and we look forward to continuing to develop his game."
Wisconsin proved it is a force to be reckoned with during doubles play on Friday with all five players making it to the quarterfinals. Petr Satral and Alexander Kostanov went one step further and advanced to the semifinals after defeating Northwestern's Alex Pasareanu and Mihir Kumar, 8-3.
"I was really pleased with the guy's performance," said Van Emburgh. "I felt like they really competed hard and showed a lot of heart out there on the courts."
The Badgers also showed they have what it takes to compete in singles play. In addition to Wikberg's success, Satral impressed by making it to the semifinals before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 to tournament winner Smith.
Kostanov advanced to the round of 16 before falling 7-5, 6-3 to eighth seeded Szymon Tatarczyk of Penn State. Alexander Kokorev also faced a tough draw in his loss to seventh seeded Barrett Franks of Michigan in the second round.
After a close 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 match against Iowa's Dominic Patrick, Jalalov did not advance in the main draw, but went on to compete in the semifinals of the singles back draw.
"We're trying to improve every day," said Van Emburgh. "We're trying to get a day better and I think that's the most important thing for us."
This weekend marked the end of fall play for Wisconsin. The fall schedule included a series of tournaments highlighted by a doubles title for Billy Bertha and Alex Robles at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and impressive showings by the team's freshmen.
Spring play begins on Jan. 26 with a 12-match home stand before the team heads on the road to face Michigan on Mar. 23.
"We've got a really solid group of eight players that can continually improve and get better for the spring," said Van Emburgh. "I look forward to the spring season."
