The Big Ten Singles Championship continued on Sunday, as play in both the main draw and consolation rounds took place. In the main draw, the remaining players competed in the third and quarterfinal round, while the consolation was played through to the final round.
The third round of the main draw started Sunday morning with one Badger still in the field of 16 players. Michael Dierberger faced off against Iowa's Christian Bierich. But the play of the fourth seeded Bierich was too much, as Dierberger was defeated 6-2, 6-4. Bierich went on to win his next match and move on to the semifinal round. Joining him will be Slavko Bijelica of Purdue, and Minnesota's Sebastian Gallego and Dino Bilankov, who each won both of their matches on Sunday.
Michael Muskievicz was the only Badger to still be playing in the consolation rounds on Sunday. With a win over Northwestern's Andrew McCarthy to start the day, Muskievicz moved on to the quarterfinals where he faced Minnesota's Julian Dehn. However, Muskievicz couldn't continue his run as he was defeated 7-6, 6-4. Dehn then won his next match over Penn State's Jason Lee to advance to the finals. He will be facing Tobias Reitz of Northwestern. Reitz won each of his first three consolation matches in straight sets, and then earned his spot in the final match by defeating Michigan's George Navas 7-5, 5-7, 10-4.
Play will conclude in the Big Ten Singles Championship on Monday. The semi and final rounds of the tournament will be aired on the Big Ten Network. Check back to UWBadgers.com tomorrow for the tournament's final results.
