Day 1 at the Big Ten Singles Championship

The Big Ten Singles Championship began on Friday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The qualifying rounds of 12 players kicked off the tournament in the morning, with the consolation qualifier taking place in the afternoon.

The six players to advance from the qualifying round were Northwesterns Andrew McCarthy, Iowas Walter Grimes and Mat Nelson, Michigan States John Stratton and Brendan Kinkopf, and Purdues Thomas Wilson. Three players also advanced through the consolation qualifier later on Friday. Matt Manasse of Purdue, Adam Altepeter of Minnesota and Philip Kafka of Northwestern each earned themselves a ticket to the main draw with their second round wins.

The only Badger playing in Fridays qualifying rounds was Michael Koval. Koval opened the tournament with a loss to Walter Grimes 6-4, 7-6. In the consolation qualifier round, Koval fell to Philip Kafka 6-4, 6-2.
