The University of Wisconsin men's tennis team opened competition at the ITA Regional Thursday night and Friday morning. Sophomores Alex Conti and Mark Weinig each competed in qualifying singles play, but both were ousted prior to advancing to the main draw.
Conti posted a straight-set 6-1, 6-2 victory over Western Illinois' Matt Kinst in the opening round of qualifying Thursday evening. However, Conti fell in the round of 32 to ninth-seeded Joseph McWilliams of Michigan State 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4.
Weinig battled the ninth-seeded player in his bracket, Northwestern's Matt Christian, but fell in two tightly contest sets 7-6(4), 7-5.
The Badgers will have three individuals and three doubles teams competing in main draw play beginning Saturday morning. Seniors David Hippee and Scott Green and junior Alex Kasarov will represent Wisconsin in singles play. The teams of Hippee/Kasarov, Conti/Green and Ward Bortz/Jordan Ramemisch will take the court for UW in doubles competition. Hippee and Kasarov are the top-seeded team in the invite.
