The Badgers continued play in the ITA Midwest Region Championships on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. Luke Rassow-Kantor, Marek Michalicka, Michael Dierberger and Moritz Baumann all played in the singles main draw, as Michalicka and Baumann were the only Badger pair still competing in the doubles draw.
32 players remained in the main draw of singles competition as play started on Saturday. Baumann and Michalicka won both of their matches, as Rassow-Kantor and Dierberger both fell in their first. Baumann started the day by defeating Michigan States John Allare in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. He won his second match again in straight sets, defeating Viktor Maksimcuk of Louisville 6-3, 6-3. Michalicka opened play on Saturday with a commanding win over Tommy McGeorge of Iowa, 6-1, 6-3. Michalicka was awarded a win in his second match of the day as Illinois Waylon Chen withdrew from the competition. Rassow-Kantor was defeated in straight sets by Michigans Peter Aarts 6-1, 7-5. Dierberger was also defeated in straight sets by Andrew Mazlin, also of Michigan, 6-3, 6-3.
After losing their opening matches of the day, Rassow-Kantor and Dierberger both went on to compete in the consolation round. Rassow-Kantor bounced back from his loss and defeated Northwesterns Peter Rispoli 6-3, 6-3. Dierberger also showed strong play, as he defeated Rob West of Cleveland State, 6-2, 6-4.
Doubles play also continued on Saturday as the pair of Baumann and Michalicka represented the only Badgers still in the tournament. After winning their first two matches on Friday, Baumann and Michalicka looked to continue their dominating play as they took on the team of Sicora and Wernet from Minnesota. Both teams showed strong play, however Baumann and Michalicka couldnt pull out the win, as they were defeated 8-6.
Both Baumann and Michalicka look to continue their run in the singles main draw, as the round of 16 will open play on Sunday. Check back to UWBadgers.com for all of Sundays result.
