The Badgers opened play in the ITA Midwest Region Championships on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. Varun Chari, Peter Marrack and Michael Muskievicz, all competed in the opening day of singles qualifying rounds, as Moritz Baumann, Marek Michalicka, Michael Dierberger and Luke Rassow-Kantor all earned slots in the main draw.
The three Badgers playing in the opening qualifying round started the tournament strong as each recorded a win. Chari faced off against Minnesotas Jake Annear, and won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Marrack also recorded a win in straight sets, defeating Sumit Gupta of Louisville 6-4, 6-0. After winning the first set 6-4, Muskievicz had trouble putting away Ty Schaub of Ohio State. Muskievicz lost the second set 3-6, but played strong and won the third in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
The second qualifying round took place later in the afternoon on Thursday. Chari couldnt find his strong play from earlier in the day, as he fell to Iowas Tommy McGeorge in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Facing off against Minnesotas Phillip Arndt, Muskievicz forced a third set but couldnt hang on, as he was defeated 6-3, 4-7, 7-6. After losing the first set 5-7, Marrack battled back and won the next two to defeat Will Vasos of Iowa 6-3, 6-3.
Play will continue on Friday with the final round of qualifying matches and the opening rounds of the doubles tournament, in which eight Badgers are competing. Check back to UWBadgers.com for more updates throughout the weekend.
