The University of Wisconsin mens tennis team got off to a rocky start at the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships on Monday. The Badgers had three men competing, yet only one was able to advance past the first round.
Senior Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) was the lone Badger to advance as he endured a tough three set match against Sanam Singh of Virginia. After losing the first set 1-6, Polley battled back in the second set. It went to a tiebreaker, but Polley prevailed 7-6 (4). The third set proved to be just as difficult. Again pushed to a tiebreaker, Polley once again triumphed by winning the set 7-6 (4). Next up for Polley will be a second round match against Thomas Liversage of San Diego at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Despite being the second seed in the draw sophomore Moritz Baumann was unable to advance to the tournaments second round. The Inzlingen, Germany native battled but ended up losing in two sets to Houston Barrick of Virginia. Baumann dropped both sets by a score of 4-6, 4-6.
The third Badger to compete was senior Jeremy Sonkin. The Wheaton, Ill. native was eliminated in the first round by Amrit Narasimhan of Memphis. Sonkin fell in the first set 4-6. He fought in the second set but ended up losing by a score of 6-7 (4).
Baumann and Sonkin will be competing in a consolation bracket on Tuesday, but at press time the times for their matches had not yet been released.
In doubles action, the duo of Baumann and Polley will compete at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday against the team of Jeff Dadamo and Johnny Hamui of Florida.
