Three Badgers traveled to Waco, Texas to begin play in the Baylor Invitational on Friday. Juniors Moritz Baumann and Michael Dierberger and sophomore Marek Michalicka are all competing in both singles and doubles play this weekend. Baumann and Michalicka will be paired together, while Dierberger is playing with Oklahoma State freshman Anton Bobytskyi for doubles play.
Both Baumann and Michalicka, who are nationally ranked as singles and together as a doubles team, started singles play in the A draw consisting of 64 players. Baumann, who won his first match against Toby Scheil 6-4, 6-1, defeated Alberto Sottocorno in his second match 7-6 (4), 6-1. Michalicka started his day in commanding fashion by beating Jonathon Obrist in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. He continued his dominating play in his second by defeating Julian Bley also in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Dierberger, who is playing his singles matches in the B draw, lost his first match against Arlen Domoney in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the pair of Baumann and Michalicka opened strong. After skipping last weekends Milwaukee Tennis Classic, Baumann and Michalicka opened up their doubles season in the A draw (32 teams) and defeated the pair of Klores/Lunt 8-5. Dierberger teamed up with Anton Bobytskyi, a freshman from Oklahoma State, to play in the A draw. The two were unsuccessful in their match against the team of Carvalho and Rojmar, as the fell 8-3.
The Badgers continue play on Saturday, as both Baumann and Michalicka continue in the rounds of 16 for both singles and doubles play. Check back to UWBadgers.com for updates throughout the weekend.
