The Wisconsin mens tennis team opened its 2003 season at the adidas Invitational in Atlanta, Friday. Advancing one doubles team to the second round, the remaining Badgers in singles competition advance to the consolation bracket.
The top Badger doubles team, senior David Hippee and junior Alex Kasarov, defeated Louisville partners, freshman Jonathan Howard and junior Mark Kennedy, 8-1 in competition Friday.
Hippee and Kasarov advance to the quarterfinals to face Arizona State doubles partners junior Clint Letcher and senior Chris Stewart Saturday.
In single action, UW sophomore Alex Conti fell to Northwestern sophomore Adam Schaechterle in two sets, 0-6, 4-6, while Louisville freshman Damar Johnson dropped Badger senior captain Scott Green 4-6, 5-7.
Also dropping in first round play, junior Alex Kasarov fell 6-7, 4-6 to Texas Christian sophomore Jacopo Tezza and senior David Hippee lost at the hands of Duke sophomore Chris Brown, 3-6, 1-6.
Sophomore Mark Wienig and freshmen Lachezar Kasarov and Mike Goodman also fell in first round competition.
The Badgers remaining in competition play Saturday.
