The Badger mens tennis team kicked off its 2004 fall campaign in Lincoln, Neb. on Friday. UWs top doubles team, freshman Jeremy Sonkin and freshman Elliott Bisnow, went 2-0 while Jordan Raemisch, Mike Goodman, and Felipe Bellido all went 1-1 in the first day of competition.
The Sonkin-Bisnow duo defeated Iowas Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor 8-6. They also beat Drake partners Jack Frankowicz and Jonathan Tishler 8-5.
Wisconsins Jordan Raemisch and Lachezar Kasarov, meanwhile, beat the Hawkeyes' Chaitu Malelmpati and Bart van Monsjour 9-7. Felipe Bellido and Mike Gooodman, the No. 3 doubles team for Wisconsin, fell to Iowas J.P. Ritchi and Aaron Schaechterle 8-5.
In singles action, Raemisch beat Denvers Ryan Slemons 6-4, 6-1, while sophomore Mike Goodman beat P.J. McGinnis of Denver 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Felipe Bellido notched his first win as a Badger, topping Nebraskas Joerg Barthel 5-7, 6-2 (10-7). Wisconsin's Steve Guntly lost to Denvers Niklas Person in two sets, 6-4, 6-0.
The Badgers take to the net again Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CST. Wisconsin will face off against Iowa and Northwestern in doubles play and take on Drake and Minnesota in singles.
