Four University of Wisconsin mens tennis players entered the seventh annual H.E.B. Baylor Invitational on Friday morning. As of Saturday night, only one remained and hes got his sights set on the tournament championship.
After defeating two opponents on Saturday, Badger sophomore Moritz Baumann ((Inzlingen, Germany) will play in the tournaments A group semi-finals Sunday morning at 8:30 A.M. Baumann had little trouble getting past the round of 16. Facing Denes Lukas of Baylor, Baumann breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The quarterfinals proved to be a bit tougher though.
Baumann squared off against Erling Tviet of Ole Miss, the tournaments No. 1 seed and the No. 7 player in the FILA/Intercollegiate Tennis Associations national rankings. Ranked No. 49 himself, Baumann battled and was able to win the first set 7-6. The second set was more decisive as Baumann, the tournaments sixth seed, prevailed 6-4. In tomorrows semi-finals, Baumann will face Matt Brown of Baylor. Should he win, the tournament championship is set for 10:00 A.M. on Sunday.
In doubles action from Friday, the team of Baumann and senior Nolan Polley (Lexington, Ky.) was defeated in the round of 16 by the Ole Miss team of Tviet and Jonas Berg. Tviet and Berg won 8-5.
