MADISON, Wis. Wisconsin captain, Billy Bertha, led the Badgers to a strong start to their 2011 fall season at the 36th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Bertha went undefeated over the weekend and was named both the singles champion and doubles champion by pairing with fellow junior Alexander Kostanov.
The Badgers went 24-7 overall during the weekend in both singles and doubles play against Ball State, Northwestern and Marquette.
Wisconsin started the weekend off Friday morning against Northwestern in singles play and Ball State in doubles.
Sophomore Fredrik Ask was the first to claim a win for the Badgers. Ask won his first set handily 6-2 and then his Wildcat opponent, Chris Jackman, retired. The Badgers then went on to win four of the remaining five matches, with Bertha and redshirt sophomore Alex Teppert both winning three set matches, to close out the No. 1 and No. 5 positions.
Wisconsin kept their strong play rolling into their doubles match by sweeping Ball State in the three doubles matches. Bertha and Kostanov earned their first win as a pair and the sophomore duo of Alex Robles and Fredrik Ask made quick work of their opponents at the No. 2 position, winning 8-3.
Saturday morning the Badgers played in-state rival Marquette in singles. The Badgers won four of their seven matches against the Golden Eagles, and freshman Jack Larsen earned his first victory as a Badger.
Later in the day, Wisconsin swept Northwestern in doubles. Bertha and Kostanov earned a tough 9-7 victory at the No. 1 position, while Ask and Robles defeated the Wildcats' No. 2 doubles team, 8-4.
The Badgers concluded play Sunday against Ball State in singles and Marquette in doubles.
Bertha won his third three-set match of the tournament by defeating the Cardinals' Dalton Albertin 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) as Wisconsin won six of their seven matches against Ball State.
Wisconsin won two of the three doubles matches against Marquette with wins at the No.1 position from Bertha and Kostanov and the No. 3 position from Robles and Akers. The win by Bertha and Kostanov capped their undefeated weekend as a doubles team.
