MADISON, Wis. – Billy Bertha and Fredrik Ask will face off against Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins of the University of Virginia to open the 2012 NCAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship, it was announced Tuesday. The event, which begins on Thursday, will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

The duo’s appearance marks the first time Wisconsin has sent a doubles team to the NCAA championships since Moritz Baumann and Marek Michalicka in 2010.

Bertha and Ask finished the season ranked No. 30 in the ITA doubles poll with an 11-6 record and 4-3 mark in Big Ten play. It marks the first appearance for both players in the individual NCAA Championships, though Bertha did play in the team championships in 2010.

Courtney and Jenkins, a No. 5-8 seed in the tournament, finished the regular season ranked No. 5 in the ITA rankings. The duo spent the season playing exclusively at the No. 1 position where they posted a 15-7 record overall and a 7-4 mark in ACC play.

Despite the difficult first round matchup for the Badger doubles pair, the two have already topped the No. 3 seed Juan Spir and Kevin King of Georgia Tech, 8-4, earlier in the season.

The winner of Thursday’s match advances into the Round of 16 to face either Florida’s Billy Federhofer and Nassim Silliam or Antoine Baroz Alexis Heugas of VCU on Friday.
