Badgers fall to Ohio State in second round of Big Ten Tournament

The No. 8 seeded University of Wisconsin mens tennis team was defeated on Friday by top-seeded Ohio State 4-0 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

The match started with doubles play, where the Buckeyes took the first two to win the doubles point. First to finish was the match at the No. 2 position where junior Michael Dierberger and his partner, senior Michael Muskievicz, faced John Allare and Balazs Novak. Allare and Novak defeated the Badger pair 8-5. Ohio State then clinched the doubles point when Bryan Koniecko and Shuhei Uzawa defeated freshman Patrick Pohlmann and junior Luke Rassow-Kantor 9-7 at the No. 3 spot. The match at the No. 1 position was suspended after the point was won, but the No. 22-ranked Badger pair of junior Moritz Baumann and sophomore Marek Michalicka was trailing No. 17 Justin Kronauge and Steven Moneke.

With the Badgers trailing 1-0, the singles matches got underway. Ohio State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as No. 108 Allare defeated sophomore Peter Marrack at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-1. The match at the No. 6 position between Rassow-Kantor and Chase Buchanan was next to finish. Buchanan defeated Rassow-Kantor in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead. The match was then clinched for the Buckeyes as they won the match at the No. 5 position. No. 70 Novak defeated Dierberger 6-3, 6-2 to give Ohio State the win and suspend the rest of the singles matches at the Nos. 1-3 positions. After winning the first set 6-4 at the No. 1 position, No. 31 Baumann lost the second to No. 3 Koniecko 6-4 before play was stopped. At the No. 2 position, No. 55 Michalicka had lost the first set 3-6, and was tied 2-2 in the second set with No. 25 Kronauge. At the No. 3 position, No. 8 Moneke had won the first set 7-6(3) over Wisconsins Pohlmann before the match was stopped.

With the loss, the Badgers will have to wait to see if they earn their 3rd straight at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The selections will be made on Sunday, April 26.
